The journal "Ateroscleroz" was created in 2004 on the initiative of academician of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Yuri P. Nikitin, who became its editor-in-chief. For many years, the journal was the only one in Russia on the problems of atherosclerosis. From 2004 to 2019, the founder and publisher of the journal was the Research Institute of Internal and Preventive Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the RAS. In 2017, the Institute became part of "The Federal Research Center Institute of Cytology and Genetics of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences", which since 2019 became the founder of the journal.
